SNC-Lavalin Wins Turnkey Contract to Build District Cooling Plants at Zayed Military City in Abu Dhabi
MONTREAL, QUEBEC--JULY 31, 2000-- SNC-Lavalin has been awarded a turnkey contract by Tabreed National Central Cooling Co. (PJSC), the first district cooling service provider in the Middle East, to provide detailed engineering, procurement and construction of two chilled water plants at Zayed Military City in Suweihan, Abu Dhabi. The project is valued at more than US$40 million and is expected to be completed by the end of 2001.
The two new plants will add 20,000 refrigerating tonnes to a total area of 12 sq. kilometres, giving the Zayed Military City project a total district cooling capacity of 24,000 refrigerating tonnes - enough to cool 8,000 homes. These two new plants will not only increase efficiency of cooling, but will also offer a reduction of up to 40 per cent in energy consumption and cost, as well as better cost efficiency in maintenance and service.
District cooling, in which chilled water produced by a central plant is distributed through a network of pipes to multiple residential, industrial and commercial buildings for air conditioning, offers a wide range of qualitative and economic benefits, including better quality of cooling, maximum cost effectiveness, capital cost elimination, space saving, decrease in sound pollution and environment protection.
"District cooling has seen considerable growth worldwide, with business and real estate developers boosting demand for this type of climate conditioning," said Sami Bebawi, Executive Vice-President of SNC-Lavalin. "There is a huge potential for district cooling in this region as it is the most economical and convenient solution for building owners and managers. We are pleased to be working with Tabreed, a pioneer in the industry in the Gulf region."
The depletion of the ozone layer due to emissions of CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) and other types of chlorinated refrigerants has been a key driver behind international growth in district cooling. This is being seen throughout the United Arab Emirates, where CFC refrigerants used locally are being phased out and replaced by non-CFC refrigerants in continuous efforts to protect the environment and ease global climate change.
