I wouldn't get to excited by polls at this stage of the game. The last one I heard from the Wall Street Journal this morning, had Bush ahead by 5 percentage points. I'm surprised its not higher given the start of the Republican convention and the weak stock market. I would expect when you get down to the nitty gritty in November, with the stock market considerably higher than it is today, that Gore/Rubin and Hillary will win. Most Americans are not going to want to rock the boat. If Bush wins, I won't lose any sleep over it. I don't dislike Bush. I could easily live with him as President. I'll just have more money to invest in equities. The problem with this election is that outside of sentimental preferences and bigger tax cuts from Bush, I don't see much of a difference between the two candidates. Sure, Clinton/Gore talk the radical liberal agenda and try to appeal to the Left in this country; but what makes you think the Left likes Clinton or Gore? Clinton struck out with the Left when health care reform went down the tubes in 1993. The Left didn't elect Clinton/Gore in 1996; they didn't even vote in the 96 election. The moderates and high tech community voted for him. The reality is that Clinton/Gore's economic policies are fairly moderate or centrist and pro equity and high tech. Bush is a moderate pragmatic Republican. Personally, I don't think either candidate inspires much more than a yawn. So, I think the final result will hinge on: "it's the economy stupid."
