Currently, 2 way paging is an application looking for a future, or is it? This next article describe how the 2 way paging system can be a dynamic low cost solution for 2 way e-mail, PIM features and specialized messaging. If you try to do this with a phone, you have some issues about coverage and higher cost.

Could applications like this be a life extender for paging? Is this really an interesting solution? I have a Handspring, and it seems to me that the expansion slot was a stroke of genius, and now to see how this pocket sized solution could turn the device into a full function e-mail product is very appealing.

It won't be long before all the palm top computers have color screens and huge non-volatile memory.

I think this could be big if a Handspring could become a full function 2 way e-mail device. Certainly it should be popular with Handspring users. For Notify, it could be a huge deal. Glenayre says this product will be available Summer 2000, so it should be available shortly.

Regards, Mark

Notify Technology Signs Strategic Relationship Agreement With Glenayre

August 1, 2000 08:31 AM Eastern Time
SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Notify Technology Corporation NTFY an innovative Communications Application Service Provider of wireless and wireline messaging services today announced that the Company is one of several new solution and application developers who has signed a strategic relationship agreement with Glenayre Technologies, Inc. GEMS . Notify and the other companies will develop and port applications to work wirelessly using Glenayre's @ctiveLink(TM) two-way wireless messaging module.
Notify Technology will port NotifyLink, which provides wireless connectivity to e-mail notification and management services to the @ctiveLink. Working with the @ctiveLink and the Handspring Visor(TM) hand held computer, NotifyLink will allow Visor users to wirelessly access and manage their personal and business e-mail accounts when they are out of the office or away from their desks -- right from the palm of their hand.

The @ctiveLink snaps seamlessly into the Springboard(TM) slot on the back of the Visor, wirelessly enabling the powerful personal information management capabilities of the Visor. The @ctiveLink has Always @ctive(TM) -- not session based -- connectivity to a ReFLEX network, whether or not it is inserted in the Visor so it is always receiving messages and there is never a need to log on to the network. ReFLEX networks provide @ctiveLink and Visor users with the broadest nationwide coverage and superior building penetration.

Paul DePond, Notify's President & CEO stated, "We are very excited about this strategic relationship agreement. Notify looks forward to working with Glenayre and implementing NotifyLink into their @ctiveLink wireless messaging module."

"Mobile workers and people with active lifestyles are looking for communication tools that allow them to keep in touch with co-workers, customers, friends and family. Utilizing NotifyLink from Notify Technology, with the @ctiveLink and Visor, will provide a lightweight alternative to users who need to be notified of and have access to their e-mail messages, but do not want to carry a heavy laptop or have to seek out a computer terminal to log in to their e-mail account," stated Jim Kelly, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Glenayre.

Using Notify's NotifyLink with the @ctiveLink and Visor eliminates the need for "mobile" or separate e-mail accounts. Users will now have an extension to their personal and/or business e-mail -- obtaining real-time notification of and access to e-mails received in these accounts. Whether at work, on the road, or at play, users can respond to their e-mails using the Visor and @ctiveLink, but because the e-mail is routed through the user's personal or business e-mail account, the e-mail recipient will think the user is reading and responding to e-mails from their desk.

Users of Notify's service, NotifyLink, can decide which e-mails are forwarded to the Visor, as well as customize the information they receive in their notification. For example, the user's notification can include the sender's name, the e-mail subject line, the text of the e-mail and/or the file name of any attachments to the e-mail.
