Jean--for spinoffs, the contract is amended to included the shares that are part of the spinoff.

Thus, a current call option on EMC would entitle the owner to buy 100 shares of stock at a specified strike price.

After the spinoff, a contract would entitle the owner to buy 100 shares of EMC plus 3.7 shares of MCDT.

For example, the most recent spinoff item (and far more significant) would be the COMS/PALM spinoff. As you can tell here:

A holder of COMS options ended up holding an option to buy both COMS and PALM.
