Revenue Worries Put the Sell on Dell
By TSC Staff

8/1/00 2:53 PM ET

PC maker Dell (DELL:Nasdaq - news) was under pressure Tuesday afternoon amid a sea of rumors concerning the company's second-quarter revenue.

The stock was down 2 3/8, or 5.4%, to 41 9/16 at midafternoon Tuesday.

The whispering on trading desks was largely inchoate, but most was focused on word that a major brokerage firm was ready to issue a cautionary note concerning softness in the company's revenue. "All those rumors have been swirling around," said Ciaran O'Kelly, a trader at Salomon Smith Barney. "We've not been able to confirm anything." Dell, in a quiet period ahead of its quarterly earnings release this month, declines to comment on market rumors.

The selling is coming on top of several sessions of weakness in the Austin, Texas-based company's stock, which has fallen about 20% since July 21.
