To be honest - I don't know. I see pro's and cons in each position. A lot depends on the size of the company. Small outfits (say < $500m revenue) do well without the conservative views that finance guys bring to the board.
However, I've seen many of these fine small companies fall apart when trying to make the transition to a $billion outfit. (and I've worked for some!) This is where the bankers seem to excel. Although not a banker, Sulpizio brought some hard nosed business sense to QCOM, certainly over the last three years or so. He has irked the engineering staff, but you can't fault his results.
