Apparently Intel has only been sampling 1.1GHz parts for a couple of weeks. They require a last minute microcode hack.

How much testing could anyone have done on it?

I expect to see a recall in the next few weeks. I hope Intel doesn't hope to get any good publicity out of this like the FDIV bug, because that kind of opportunity only works once.
