Carl,

You are not the only EE around here, and I would not like the thread to assume that you speak authoritatively for the engineering community. You have missed the point completely here on the discussion about the timing.

1) Rambus specifies the layout of the interconnect, and its impedance and termination in such a way that the behavior of reflected signals can be predicted accurately.

DDR does not

2) Rambus uses current mode (high impedance) signaling, to minimize the effect of pin and driver loading on signal integrity.

DDR does not

3) Each Rambus IC uses its (patented) register to determine when it will output it's data onto the bus, so that differences in propagation delay from different places on the bus can be equalized. This simplifies controller design and lengthens the allowable bus.

DDR does not

4) Rambus IC's continually adjust their output timing to keep the data timing correct as temperature and supply voltage varies on the devices and board

DDR devices do not.

All these things put together make Rambus a far easier (safer) choice for the design engineer. I would much rather design to read data from a 630ps rock steady window, than a 2.5ns window with 2.5ns jitter! I can be more confident that a design which works when I test it today will still work when the customer is looking at it tomorrow.

Rambus is simply a more advanced, more stable, more predictable technology.

Ian
