IBM Selects American Power Conversion Power Protection to Enhance Availability of Netfinity(R) Servers

WEST KINGSTON, R.I., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- American Power Conversion (Nasdaq: APCC) today announced that IBM has expanded its customized APC power protection offering for Netfinity(R) servers to include the Smart-UPS(R) 5000 rack-mount uninterruptible power supply (UPS). IBM can now deliver APC's Smart-UPS 5000 to help increase the availability of its Netfinity 8500R enterprise servers optimized for business-critical applications including storage area networks (SAN), enterprise resource planning (ERP), and e- business.

The Smart-UPS 5000 joins APC's existing offering for Netfinity customers which includes the Smart-UPS 700, 1000, 1400, 1400 rack-mount, and 3000 rack- mount solutions.

The Smart-UPS 5000 rack-mount, which offers a customized bezel and back plate to fit IBM power distribution units (PDU), participates in IBM's configure-to-order program where the UPS can ship already installed in the rack. The UPS uses APC's award-winning PowerChute(R) plus UPS management software which works seamlessly with Netfinity Manager(TM) to monitor and manage server systems. In addition, the Smart-UPS 5000 is certified through IBM's ServerProven(TM) program, confirming configuration compatibility with Nefinity products.

"As servers become increasingly more robust and support new applications such as storage, the business-criticality of this equipment grows as well," said Peter Rumsey, vice president of APC's Enterprise Systems Group. "The Smart-UPS 5000 helps enhance the availability of these types of servers, in turn, helping to make businesses more productive."

"We selected APC as our power protection vendor for the Netfinity 8500R given the long-standing relationship between the two companies as well as APC's integration with Netfinity Manager," said Brian Fullington, program director, Netfinity Options, IBM Personal System Group. "In this agreement, APC once again demonstrated its competence in developing a customized solution that provides a seamless appearance and operational integration with our Netfinity products."

The APC Smart-UPS 5000 rack-mount solution is among the smallest 5000VA units in the UPS industry, consuming only five U of rack space (22.25cm/8.75 inches). The unit also has received Microsoft's "Certified for Windows" logo, verifying that it was tested by the Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQLs) for compatibility with Microsoft's Windows 2000.
