Out of sight, out of mind

What it will take to get ODP moving is some flashy good news from ODP or the office supply sector in general. It's hard to imagine that 18 months ago, 3 or 4 of the financial managers on Wall Street Week's New Year's Predictions show included Staples in their portfolios.

Things went South in the office supply from that point on. It was hot and then it was not!

I suspect a lot of investors got burned on Staples and decided that between Staples, ODP, and OfficeMax, the market was pretty saturated. In our area, there is one of each of these stores within half a mile of each other.

I think each of these chains needs to consider weeding out low-performing stores. Maybe they should follow Walmart's lead and locate regional superstores near Walmart in less populated rural areas where there is less competition.

The low Euro and strong dollar have hurt earnings from ODP's expansion in Europe. If the dollar weakens, that could give ODP a boost in earnings.
