Buckeye Pipe Line swaps right-of-way for telecom stake
EMMAUS, Pa., Aug 2 (Reuters) - Buckeye Pipe Line Co. said Wednesday it has agreed to grant access to its pipeline right-of-way in exchange for an equity interest of slightly less than 50 percent in PetroNet Corp., which plans a 13,500 mile fiber optic network serving 22 cities in the U.S. Northeast and Midwest.

Through a multi-year contract with Cisco Systems Inc. (NasdaqNM:CSCO - news), PetroNet will deploy the full suite of Cisco optical products to build a fiber optic network that will be the first to offer low cost Dynamic Bandwidth services to the carriers' carrier market, Buckeye said.

The pipeline is the general partner of Buckeye Partners LP (NYSE:BPL - news).

Buckeye's petroleum product pipelines in the heavily populated Northeast and Midwest will provide most of the right-of-way needed, PetroNet spokesman Tom Huzzak said.

He said other equity providers include venture capitalists and PetroNet's vendors -- Cisco and Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news),which will provide the optical fiber.
