I have read that the prospects of surrender were very bad, and not only over the Emperor, and that it was expected that casualties, on both sides, would be in the millions, and fatalities in the hundreds of thousands, once an invasion of the home islands was mounted. Remember, the Japanese did not surrender after Hiroshima......

I do not know the situation concerning Vietnam. I will see if I can find some material on the decision to bomb, to substantiate what I recall........
