SunSpot - virtually all of the DSL setups I have seen here also use a router, and there is no particular problem about using that as a connection for everything in the home. Some of the providers will charge you extra if you have more than one address leased on that router - which is why the ability to have the access managed through a single address is worthwhile. The particular address you have may change - typical lease is three days, and of course you get a new address if you disconnect and reconnect for any reason.

It is also easier to manage a firewall when there is a single box connected to the DSL line - I don't want to get into firewall here, but it is a good thing to think about with an "always-on" connection.

As far as the share access, there are some minor differences but you can still give access to "everyone" or implement share-specific password access, rather than a client - based security model. I'm surprised that anyone familiar with NT security would have any trouble with Win2K, it's a superset for the most part. The comment about Win9X is very confusing, as Win9X clients don't participate in domain security - I have never registered my Win9X clients with the NT server and just log in using a domain account. But then I have not doen anything fancy with Active Directory. Maybe these people have some additional constraints beyond what I need, which make it harder for them.
