Excuse me for butting in, FS, but have you ever been in a war zone? Have you ever been shot at -- or had to shoot at someone else yourself? Have you ever sat through a bombing raid, or been rounded up into a concentration camp?

I submit that if you don't feel "normal" fear under circumstances like that, you won't live very long. X is quite right; fear can be adaptive.
