Didn't they also have the British, French, and American forces in place nearby in case of Poland? Berlin airlift is another case in point of how the Russians were able to keep escalating their assimilation of Eastern and Central Europe. How did we get to be perceived to be weak to be placed in that situation? I don't give points for someone who screws up and saves his own ass, and claims victory.
