Tucci said EMC will deploy an "overlay" sales force of networking experts to seek out new NAS customers in addition to a more traditional sales force focusing on companies according to their size. He declined to say how many salespeople these teams would have.

Network Appliance has focused more on mid-sized companies and EMC on large companies, but Tucci said EMC will increasingly target mid-sized companies. EMC is in the process of adding to its product line NAS storage devices aimed at mid-sized companies. Its Celerra line has until now focused on large-company NAS storage.

EMC posted $100 million in Celerra sales during the last quarter, representing year over year growth of 660% for its high-end NAS product. Now it appears poised to develop more diskless ( and even disk-based) NAS products to extend the functionality of the ESN to meet the burgeoning storage requirements for two basic types of data:

1) Enterprise Data - doubling every year.
2) Internet Data - doubling every 90 days.

In terms of Enterprise Data, the Bertelsmann architecture remains the most robust I have seen so far with close to a petabyte of online storage. As a global media company whose main intellectual property assets will eventually be digitized, it also provides a look at how companies are dealing with rich media.

To ensure continuous service availability, Bertelsmann mediaSystems has consolidated its customers' data on an EMC Enterprise Storage Network (ESN). BmS has installed 50 EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems, as well as multiple EMC Connectrix systems to integrate and connect all of its servers within the framework of the ESN. BmS relies on EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) software to provide instantaneous copies of data residing on the storage systems located at both primary and remote secondary sites to ensure the seamless continuation of business processes. EMC TimeFinder software allows BmS to carry out online backups without having to interrupt production applications.

The company also uses EMC ControlCenter software for enterprise-wide and efficient management of its data, which allows BmS to view and administer all data from a centralized console.

In terms of internet data, EMC has operated its best-practices hosting service as a P&L operation since 1996 so it has a very good working understanding of the economics of that business and the rate at which corporations of all sizes and types will adopt outsourcing storage. I believe that is going to continue to drive their mid-range NAS product development.
