Everyone I've seen die looked afraid. They look like little kids look- before they can talk, when they are in pain and unable to comprehend what is happening Hard to separate fear of pain and fear of death- after all pain is a signal of disease, and mortality. Heck I've even seen dogs and cats and rabbits that looked fearful at approaching death.

I was with my dad when his open heart surgery started to go wrong. He was afraid, and confused and in pain. And he was one of the bravest people I know or have known. It didn't last a really long time for him, he went into a coma fairly fast, but before the coma there was fear.

People who try to commit suicide often say there is a moment, after they've jumped, for example, when they realize "OH SH*T I wish I hadn't done this, I didn't realize before but I don't want to DIE." Up until that moment when it becomes real they are actively seeking death- but I think there is waiting for most of us the "oh sh*t" moment. If we're lucky it will be short.
