The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Aug. 3, edition that De Beers Consolidated Mines has joined a little-known Canadian mining firm to explore for diamonds on the nation's Arctic Coast -- a project that began with a search for metals. A Reuters News Agency dispatch to The Globe reports that Darnley Bay Resources, a Toronto-based firm listed on the Canadian Venture Exchange, says De Beers has agreed to pay $500,000 toward the $2.25-million exploration program. De Beers will conduct its own tests and pay for the concentration and analysis of samples from the 10,000-square-kilometrre area in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, 403 kilometres east of Inuvik on the Arctic Coast. Darnley says it became aware of the potential for diamonds while exploring for nickel, copper and platinum group elements. The company says the Geological Survey of Canada has described the area as one of the richest base metal deposits in North America -- possibly four times richer than the nickel-rich Sudbury basin in Ontario.
