Moscow--Aug. 2--Russian cellular operator St.Petersburg Telecom said Wednesday it had launched a digital CDMA mobile network. Its testing will last until Sept. 1, when St.Petersburg Telecom will launch a commercial service on the new network. The network would operate parallel to the existing N-AMPS network, launched in 1994,
St.Petersburg Telecom said in a press release.

The network equipment had been supplied by Motorola, the press release said.

U.S. Qualcomm would be supplying stationary CDMA handset
equipment, while Motorola would also supply dual-standard
CDMA-N-AMPS mobile handsets, according to the press release.

St.Petersburg Telecom has over 20,000 clients and controls over 7% of the St.Petersburg cellular market. End
