Yes, you have missed something. He was a fighter pilot in the National Guard at a time when he could not have known he would not be called up (the Air Guard had a major role in Korea). No one ever accused him of being an alcoholic, nor has he said he was one. Rather, he occasionally drank too much, and one day decided to stop, and did so. That takes character. In any event, character is something you develop, and you cannot judge solely by 20 or 30 year old incidents............
