I was looking at some of the published benchmarks and duron is fairly close to athlon at the same frequency.
The difference in prices is also small as compared to the total chip price or system price.
Seeems to me that duron would just cannibalize on athlon sales as celeron did pII's.
I would assume that the yields on duron should be close to athlon and probably better because of the smaller die. If true then it might be a conscious decision to hold durons until either ddr which would separate the performance or untill mustang operating at higher frequency.

I've always had this concern, after hearing about how well the Duron performed. I wonder though if AMD hasn't shifted some Duron wafer starts back to the old athlon, in order to soak up the excess slot A motherboard supplies (wasn't 1 million the rumor?). Compaq and HP seem to still be selling classic Athlon systems, at least according to their web pages (512 L2 cache).

I really don't understand what is going on with the stock price. I think in the end it all comes down to Willy. Willy is going to be a loser, I can feel it. Too much new technology, too fast (power hungry motherboard, aggressive rambus chipset, cpu with a crazy core). If Intel's progress has been so good, how come Intel's roadmap shows plans to scrap ALL three in six months?

Only time will tell...
