I do see your point about the multiple equivalent products. Priceline offer the same flight, but different airline carriers. In terms of my DVD example that would require that I place a bid for each of all DVD players on auction and use the bid butler on all of them with the same maximum price (of course I could not place all of those at the same time, because I might end up with five DVD players).

I don't get your one person point though. A lot of persons might be putting in a bid on Priceline at the same time or at different time. And those people will have to bid over the same amount of inventory or supply. So, if you place a request on Priceline for a flight for your own price of 145 dollars and I place a request with my own price of 150 dollars I will get the seat on the plane before you. I am not sure what the difference would make up.

Anyway, even if the Priceline business model is unique it will be impossible to protect from being used by anybody else. It is just not possible to have patent on individuals buying price's. It just doesn't make any sense that I can't tell my supplier what I want to pay for products without having to pay priceline license fee. So, the only thing left for patent is the marketing statement 'name your own price' and branding. There is no technical business model beside the regular discount retail/auction style business. Priceline is therefore exposed to all the same competition as everybody else selling those products. Priceline do have brand name value though. One thing is brand name a different business model.

As an investor I should not valuate Priceline any different than other discount retailers or auction sites based on the business model. I can valuate Priceline different because of the brand name. Priceline do have a stronger brand name than UBID.com or egghead. Maybe, even stronger than Expedia.COM. Probably not as strong as AMAZON.com though.
