Steve,

You points on MP3 are well taken.

When CF first hit the scene you really could use an 8 or 16 MB card in a 640 x 480 resolution camera and be happy. As camera resolution increases those same cards are now obsolete. SanDisk has trouble manufacturing 8 MB cards because of their transition to 256 Mbit.

When MMC hit the scene that same 8 or 16 or 32 MB of storage was inadequate for the MP3 market. The sweet spot will be 64 MB and above which will require 512 Mbit technology for cost effective manufacture. Thus, we are behind a bit with MMC in MP3 compared to CF in digital cameras.

One fear I have is that most MMC sales are going toward OEM bundles and fewer are being sold in the aftermarket. Thus, sales ramp ups are currently reflecting new design-ins and OEM sales. Sooner or later the demand may fall if smaller OEM's drop out of the MP3 market or if aftermarket sales fail to materialize, or, heaven forbid, if both occur simultaneously. SanDisk needs to get FlashVision up and running ASAP.

Sooner or later we may start seeing MMC digital cameras. Right now capacity concerns prevent this. I still favor the CF form factor in digital cameras because it is a nice handy size and it is cool.

Don't forget the cool factor.
