Ram,

My guess is that the combination of MOT and KLIC news triggered the selling. Some were trying to extrapolate a peaking of the semi cycle from the KLIC announcement, though I think that is off the mark. The real problem, I think, is that are many short-term players in ALSC who are inclined to head for the exits on any whiff of potentially negative news. My guess is that today's action flushed out many of the weak hands.

Another potential negative for ALSC has been the weakness of the Taiwan stock exchange. ALSC's substantial ownership of UMC makes that a big deal. However, UMC's business has remained very strong, and its stock has held up well in a generally weak Taiwan market. Eventually, both UMC and ALSC should get a boost when the IPO is announced for the UMC ADR's.
