I did not read "putting pedal to the metal" the same way you did. To me, that means "investing yourself in whatever you are doing without holding back."

For example, you say that "most people deserve credit for taking care of themselves and their families." Taken a look at the divorce rate lately? How many people truly commit themselves to another, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, etc.??

In this, as in other matters, I think too many people today are lukewarm. (And you know what is supposed to happen to those who are neither hot nor cold.)
