Well, dammit Neo, as soon as I posted that reference I realized how inapt the comparison was. Why don't you help me out with a film reference in which a subordinate stood up to a superior at the risk of losing his job because it was the right thing to do? Because he knew no matter how many checks he would collect in the future, he would ever redeem his dignity (in his own eyes, in the eyes of his superiors, and his co-workers.) Because he knew that kind of self-abasement, while financially expedient, and possibly prudent, in the short term would have negative long term repercussions because of the personal precedent he'd set. So that when his son Billy sat on his knee and asked him about what it means to be a man,how to stand up for one's self, how to comport with a some modicum of pride, he wouldn't have to say, "Son, see that shiny BMX bike I bought for you--I bought that with a shit sandwich I ate at work, see your mother's new Kitchenaid. . . your sister's braces . . . well my boy, if you're ever in the same situation at work, I suggest you do the same so you don't blow your job. We play it safe in this family, son, cause I can eat a lot of those sandwiches, but I can't find a new job!"
Now what was the name of that movie? |
