Paul,
How goes it? Itanium doing well? Last I heard it hasn't shipped yet. Maybe if they can get an exception handler to work in a compiler, folks might start getting excited about Itanium. Would help, right? ;-)
BTW... EV68 .. remember this:
"A first generation ITanium - probably shipping in a few months - will be infinitley faster than an EVxyz Alpha that doesn't even yet exist.
Which product do you think customers will prefer - and BUY ?"
A few months Paul? How do you define the word "is"? But back to my point here... check this out. Folks are buying EV68 and they don't even exist yet! Can the same be said of Itanium? No. Itanium is still a loser, right?
news.cnet.com
"The new Compaq supercomputer will consist of 682 Compaq servers, each with four EV68 processors running at 1.1 GHz, Lipcon said. The chips will be an upcoming design with 0.18-micron features and copper technology, he said, and the four-way servers will be an as-yet unannounced design."
That is just one spin on the EV68, much faster ones in the pipeline ... we shall see, won't we?
Get used to Alpha on the high-end and winning contracts left and right. That 21264 is basically a 5 year old design, wait until you get a load of the 21364.
Itanium was a neat concept. Too little and too late and too hot and too slow , etc. etc. Rob |
