Here's a story for Pat since I think she follows ALA (small mention of JDSU in here as well)

Alcatel Optical Division Valued at FF100 Billion, Paper Says

Paris, Aug. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Alcatel SA's optical components unit, which is expected to have a tracking stock created for it this year, was valued at about 100 billion French francs ($13.8 billion) by some analysts, French daily Les Echos said, citing reports by Merrill Lynch & Co. and others.

The valuation for Europe's second-biggest phone equipment maker's optical unit is based on forecast sales next year of 650 million euros ($589 million), an increase of 63 percent from expected 2000 sales, the Merrill Lynch study said.

The figures value Alcatel's optical components unit at between 20 and 30 times next year's sales and gives the division a bigger market value than companies such Renault SA and Air Liquide SA. JDS Uniphase Corp., the world's No. 1 optical components company, is valued at about 40 times sales, the newspaper said.
