Using FY dates, this puts NTT 6 months behind at present on rolling out commercial service.

But, like you, I see NTT staying staying close to their present schedule.

However, this will be largely due to a collaboration with, and equity interest in, SpinCo - who will provide multi-mode chipsets and ASICs. Look for the deal this year.

What will wCDMA look like in 2+ years when Europe is ready? Nothing like Europe expects. Europe is on the bench and out of the game while Asia takes the ball.

Nokia. Gonna be way late for 1x in Korea and Japan(DDI/IDO) and U.S. - gonna be way late for whatever wCDMA becomes in Japan in 2001.

Gonna be too busy grafting air conditioners and generators onto EDGE handsets.

Gonna face new competition from CPQ, DELL, GTW, MSFT, PALM, Sony, HWP, not to mention Kyocera, Samsung, Hitachi and a raft of new China and Taiwan companies. Welcome to the new world of horizontally-integrated, commodity handset (communications appliance) manufacturing.
