Over on the LRCX thread, Jerome posted a reference from CNBC.com that had a perspective of the semi-equips

It also mentions KLIC so I thought I would repeat the information here.

cnbc.com

The specific part on KLIC is copied below, but the whole article should be read for context.

"Kulicke & Soffa Industries Inc. {KLIC}

It isn’t a household name and probably won’t be anytime soon, for that matter,
analysts say.

The company makes assembly-equipment products that help complete the
chip’s electrical circuit.

Despite a year of losses in 1999, the company is poised to post earnings of
$2.04 and $3.01 for 2000 and 2001, respectively, according to First Call Corp.
consensus estimates. It could be considered a bargain, though, trading at just
7.3 times next year’s earnings.

The company’s sequential revenue growth for the fiscal third quarter ended June
30 slowed significantly. A large portion of its orders come from
contract-packaging houses.

Kulicke & Soffa reported Thursday that it is delaying some shipments that
could affect near-term results."

If this is representative of the thinking in the analyst and reporting community, we are in dire trouble indeed.
