Missed that regulation ...
The regulation I didn't miss what when a majority of fundamentalists was elected to the school board when I was a kid (about 1966). I never thought of our library as a den of pornography, but the board managed to locate Mutiny on the Bounty, Midsummer's Night Dream, and Moby Dick as books too corrupting for young minds and had them removed. It was probably a plot to get us to read more, because several kids quickly got copies from the city library to see what the fuss was. It was easy to spot the topless babes and hanky panky in the first two, but Moby Dick had us stumped (plus it wasn't particularly easy to read). There was a scene where the men were squeezing whale blubber and occasionally each other's hands, and maybe that was the culprit. Eventually the board backed down after teachers threatened to quit and all three books (along with 1984) became assigned reading for the next year.
