What's with this air interface obsession? I'm talking about the core of the network. The core of W-CDMA networks overlaid on GSM will use GPRS for packet-switched data.

Nobody is "replacing" GSM, no matter how tempting that may sound. The W-CDMA handsets in GSM markets will incorporate GSM and GPRS. Data is being moved via W-CDMA networks when possible. And it's not possible for years outside of major cities.

There is no mass market for W-CDMA phones that do not offer GSM multi-mode features outside of Korea and Japan.

When you see an announcement of a W-CDMA deal, the dollar amount does not refer to air interface. It also refers to massive core network expansion and updating work. Which has nothing to do with the air interface.

Finland had the 3G auction more than a year ago and one of the contenders was planning cdma2000. They did not follow through. Interviewed Finnish government official specifically stated that the standard is not mandatory - as long as one contender picks W-CDMA and guarantees roaming for people visiting Finland, the rest can do as they please.
There are masses of newspaper articles on this in Finnish. This information did not get any coverage in USa as far as I know.

Two years ago DoCoMo was supposed to launch W-CDMA in March 2001. That has now slipped to April 2001. No more, no less.
