Houston people are a wonderful breed, in general. Every time I've visited Houston and gone to a bar (which is usually what I do after whatever training or meetings I'm attending), there has always been a great deal of friendlyness and fun to 'em. Always a lot of singing, and it's easy to meet people. Austin is pretty much the same way, but it's a much younger crowd that I identify with more. Although, it's getting to be a little snotty, Austin is my fav so far. What I dont like about Houston can be summed up in three words: NO ZONING & POLLUTION.
Houston air generally just stinks, and the church next to the porn shop next to the industrial plant next to the schoool next to the neighborhood next to the high rise just makes for badly organized city planning, IMO. But, I do think it's kinda kewl that there is some place that people actually embrace that kinda anarchy. Has some real freedom to it. It's also kinda wierd though cause the suburbs are highly regulated and zoned....One of my best friends from college lived in Cy-Fair - and they regulated everything from parked cars to cut grass.
Austin is struggling with urban sprawl, but not nearly on the scale of Houston. I think Urban Sprawl is going to be a huge issue in about five years. I just can't imagine driving an hour to work every day. I'm gonna catch flack for this, but I'll say it anyway...the best city I've ever been in when it comes to transportation is D.C. The metro kicks ass. I dont like paying for it, but it is very, very efficient.
