Dennis -- Well the dividends from GE are not going to make my retirement easy,, LOL!
Actually 'planning' is the key. The aspect with the most impact is WHERE you retire. I live in E Oh. The cost of living here is very low. Add the fact that you will have some additional expenses and some others will go away IMO to retire here with a nest egg and 75% - 100% of your income. Planning for those with a defined pension and a long recent bull mkt is easy.
Those vessels in the $700K range are just a bit out of my comfort range too,, <gggggggggggggg>. I'm not teasing myself yet. Retirement in 2 1/2 years and I'll have on ordered for delivery 5/1/03.....
