SBC Communications Inc.-BellSouth Corp. joint venture will operate on both TDMA and GSM technologies. Next year, the company plans to introduce "gate phones," which will allow subscribers to roam across the platforms. Third-generation EDGE technology will be deployed at the end of 2001.
