What does it mean to be proprietary anyway? This is such an abused term in the technology field.

Microsoft Windows is a proprietary system...........it just happens to have 99% of the market share so by definitinon it became the standard.

As long as you can INTEROPERATE & INTERCONNECT different vendor's platforms, it doesn't matter whether a switch is proprietary or not -- especially if the key functionalities are open through system-level acccess & API's at the application level.

NT's system integrates just as well with other vendor's equipment including Juniper.

Anyway, the whole argument of proprietary versus standards-based issue is less important in the Carrier networking world.

For example you may have MCI-Worldcom use 5 or 6 different vendor equipment (including NT) to create their network. So if you can mix & match different vendor's equipment in your network, what's the big deal regarding proprietary versus open..........if you can even define it properly that is.
