Hi peggylynn - I don't know enough to give you any definitive response, but SONET and DWDM are 2 different segments, if Mr Johnson meant that, he would have a problem with the technology communities by confusing the issues, i.e., had that been what he meant, he should have said something like ONIS and SCMR were in a higher growth segment. I reckon the possibility that each of these 2 segments can be either open or proprietary, if they are applicable, but they are apple and orange to me.

Besides, NT has both, so there is a concern there. Interestingly, I ve always got the impression that JDSU is the gorilla of the component biz. Chances are it still is, in specific component segments like pump laser modules etc etc. However, for the time being, NT [and I think LU too] has a higher revenue # than JDSU. Not sure if it is still true after SDLI though. So, how are we going to judge. Should NT be ignored b/c she is not a pure play.

I understand people like Mr Johnson and Mr Gilder have a strong following, and, like it or not, there is a lot of self-fulfilling prophecy going on, but I simply think the world may not be so neat and tidy. Rather, product momentum should be one of the factors, albeit a major one, one considers. To me, one of the real traces of a gorilla is management. And I certainly think Mr Roth & co fit that mold :)

best, Bosco
