I should have added an emoticon, a VBG. That line was nothing more than a wish for a big breakthrough. I have no knowledge of what is happening in JDSU's R&D labs. Also, I do not know if there are dispersion, if that is even the right word, problems in solitons; as for solitons, I can barely even spell the word, having no scientific background in photonics.
I find your speculations interesting, particularly the one about supermodules, since I believe that is how to move down the designing and manufacturing learning curves. Smaller, cheaper, faster and integrated on a chip seems to me to be a highly desirable advance, as is any advance toward all optical networking.
Metro just seems to be a large and new market. What would be cool would be reference design and modules for that market specifically. But, I have no idea what JDSU will in fact do as phase 4. My guesses are barely informed WAGs.
