Toshiba Develops Cell Phone Remote for Appliances, Asahi Says

--From AOl.-- Cooters

Tokyo, Aug. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Toshiba Corp. has developed technology that allows users to operate home appliances remotely via mobile phone, the Asahi newspaper reported without citing sources. The service, which the company plans to start in 2002, will allow users to turn on air conditioning or set up a video recorder via NTT DoCoMo Inc.'s i-mode and other mobile Internet access services. The system will be compatible with a wide variety of home appliance standards, the report said.

NTT DoCoMo, Japan's largest mobile phone company, has allied with Sun Microsystems Inc. of the U.S. to make its mobile Internet service more useful by using Sun's Java and Jini systems.
