CG, I've lived in condos for the past 20 years. As the older hard wired intercom/door openers have failed, the cost of rewiring and the convenience of taking a front door call from any phone in the house, has prompted home owner associations to opt for the phone system. From what I've seen, this is also the preferred choice for new installs as well. It does as you've described.

For a long time I've simply used my call forwarding to get front door inquiries on my cell phone if I've been expecting a delivery or a guest.

However, there's no magic to the system, it just turns a front door inquirery into a phone call. The ability to communicate with appliences and such is a whole different technology.
