Fatbrain.com Achieves Punchout Compliance with Ariba's eCommerce Service; Enhancement Gives J.D. Edwards Employees Real-Time Content Access and Convenient Online Shopping

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 7, 2000-- Fatbrain.com(TM) (Nasdaq:FATB), the leader in Web-based information management for businesses, today announced an enhancement that gives customers real-time access to their internal, online information resource center when making purchases through Ariba, Inc.'s (Nasdaq:ARBA) eCommerce service. Dubbed punchout-compliant by Ariba, the enhancement allows Fatbrain.com's customers to enjoy all the dynamic capability of their online information resource centers in real time and in seamless conjunction with the one-stop shopping convenience of their Ariba solution. J.D. Edwards & Company (Nasdaq:JDEC) is among the first corporations to use Fatbrain.com's punchout-compliant online information store.

"Fatbrain.com is always looking for ways to enhance our offering to make it the most convenient and comprehensive Web-based information management solution available," said Dennis Capovilla, president and CEO of Fatbrain.com. "By achieving punchout compliance with Ariba, we ensure our corporate customers can realize full value of their Fatbrain.com solution, even when they choose to take advantage of the Ariba eCommerce service."

The Fatbrain.com online resource center developed for J.D. Edwards provides its employees with intranet access to a wide selection of books, training materials and recommended readings. To simplify their online purchases, employees use Ariba's business-to-business eCommerce service, which enables them to buy from multiple suppliers at one time, but pay as a single, consolidated transaction. Suppliers selected for a company's internal, online Ariba shopping mall typically provide Ariba with a static catalog file of products rather than the ability to "punch out" to the supplier's actual Web site.

Fatbrain.com's punchout compliance allows corporate shoppers to gain direct access to their company's co-branded Fatbrain.com online information resource center as they shop using Ariba and then return to their company's Ariba interface to complete their shopping through a single, consolidated transaction. Fatbrain.com was Ariba's first online information resource center supplier to have punchout capability. This capability avoids the functionality and content restrictions of static catalog files and ensures employees accessing a company's online information resource center has access to the most updated information available. Punchout compliance also permits Fatbrain.com customers to use Ariba's convenient, one-stop shopping service in conjunction with their online information resource centers.

J.D. Edwards, a leading supplier of e-business solutions, uses its Fatbrain.com online professional information resource and training center to give over 4,500 employees access to knowledge resources on subjects like artificial intelligence, XML and database security. "Fatbrain.com was one of the first suppliers we included in our Ariba service because we recognized that our employees need a convenient way to buy the most up-to-date professional information and resources," said Mary Henneck, supply chain solutions manager at J.D. Edwards.

Fatbrain.com also provides a punchout-compliant online information resource center for Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HWP), and preferred online information resource centers for industry leaders like IBM (NYSE:IBM), Novell, Inc. (Nasdaq:NOVL), Palm, Inc., (NASDAQ:PALM), SGI (NYSE:SGI), Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq:SUNW) and Apple Computer Inc. (Nasdaq:AAPL).
