Since AMD and Intel's 64 bit platforms have nothing in common, it will be exceedingly difficult for AMD's to succeed if Intel has already gotten a sizable 64-bit market share position when AMD's comes out (i.e.: who would want to adapt x86-64 if IA64 already appears to be on the path to dominance?). Luckily, if AMD hits with sledgehammer by 2H 2001, AMD should be fine given the joke (aka: "testing platform") that Itanium appears to be, and the non-arrival of McKinley until about the same time frame as SledgeHammer.
