A post script to my early tale of school board elections in Austin. (A stealth campaign led to the election of fundamentalists, who messed up various things before getting booted the next election, The board and their supporters left the public school system to found a fundamentalist private school). Well, they brag on their school (Crossroads) as often as there are reports of trouble in public schools. They are also the most vocal supporters of vouchers. However according to todays paper (the story was not in the online version) the school isn't opening this season. It seems that the financial difficulties were not so much the lack of vouchers, but just your plain old embezzlement. It seems like the school was paying for the preacher/headmaster's truck, and thousands of dollars in cell phone bills by him and his wife, and salary advances to some of his favorite staff. When the rest of the staff showed up there was no money left. The preacher says that the schools finances are a religious matter and should not be investigated. TP
