Great article on ATM to DSPOSs, the 21st century network. I'm glad you pointed it out, especially:
<<"In the race to supply hardware for the new RBOC ATM-access network, it appears that Alcatel has a commanding lead, with Marconi in second place. Both companies have leveraged their experience with ATM access gained in the European market to steal the march on domestic leaders like Cisco, Lucent, and Nortel. The Alcatel acquisition of Newbridge will give Alcatel a credible ATM switch to match with its ATM fiber remotes, giving the company a shot at the whole RBOC ATM equipment space-a space that could be worth as much as $35 billion over the next five years.">>

Alcatel Continues to Lead DSL Race With Another Industry 'First'
Milestone Performance Further Evidence of Alcatel's DSL Market and Technology Leadership biz.yahoo.com RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 7, 2000--Alcatel (NYSE:ALA - news), the world leader in Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) solutions, announced today that it shipped a record 1.1 million central office Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) lines to its worldwide customer base during the three-month period ended June 30, 2000, bringing Alcatel's installed base to over 3.5 million lines.
The second quarter shipment volume is more than 300 percent ahead of the same period last year and nearly 50 percent ahead of the prior quarter. Customer premises equipment (CPE) shipments reached 325 thousand units worldwide in the quarter, 420 percent ahead of the same period last year and nearly double the prior quarter. The second quarter shipments include for the first time DSL lines deployed in the Alcatel Litespan Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) in addition to traditional Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) line shipments.
``Alcatel continues to strengthen its competitive position in the overall DSL market,'' said Ron Westfall, Senior Analyst, Current Analysis, Inc. ``This extraordinary second quarter shipment performance is evidence of the exploding demand for DSL service and Alcatel's clear market share and technology leadership position among suppliers of DSL solutions. Much of Alcatel's DSL market strength to date is due to the widespread adoption of the Alcatel 1000 ATM Subscriber Access Multiplexer (ASAM). With its new DSLAM offerings and Litespan NGDLC DSL line cards now shipping, Alcatel has an even stronger DSL proposition for its customers.''
``We are very proud of the fact that we have added yet another 'first' to our list of leadership accomplishments in the DSL industry,'' said Mike Dobbs, vice president and general manager, Alcatel DSL business unit. ``Alcatel's shipment volume in the second quarter is clear evidence that we are stepping up to the exploding market demand.''
In addition to ADSL line shipments, Alcatel began shipping Symmetric DSL (SDSL) and ISDN DSL (IDSL) central office lines in the second quarter as well. In this initial ramp-up period, Alcatel shipped 32 thousand SDSL lines and 12 thousand IDSL lines. Alcatel defines a central office DSL line shipment as the delivery of an actual central office modem to a service provider for network deployment. Unfulfilled orders (backlog) are not counted. This metric yields a true measure of supplier market presence and provides a more accurate indication of supplier market share than other metrics such as ``capacity shipped,'' ``DSLAMS installed,'' and ``number of central offices,'' all of which can count empty slots for modems or unused rack space. The central office line shipment measure also more accurately tracks the service provider community's immediate ability to support DSL subscribers.
