Active Voice Strengthens Position as the Third Largest Voice Messaging
Provider in the United States Dataquest, a Leading Industry Market Research and
Consulting Firm, Releases Latest Market Study

SEATTLE, Aug 8, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Active Voice Corporation
(Nasdaq: ACVC), a global leader of unified messaging and computer telephony
software solutions, announced today that Dataquest, a leading market research
and consulting firm, reports that Active Voice maintained its position as the
third largest voice messaging provider in the United States for 1999. The
recently published report from Dataquest, entitled "U.S. Voice Messaging Systems
Market Share and Forecast, 2000," showed Active Voice was exceeded in the
overall market share only by Nortel Networks and Lucent Technologies, based on
the number of voice messaging systems shipped last year.

"We are very pleased with the high rankings we achieved last year, and are proud
to also be the largest independent manufacturer of voice and unified messaging
solutions," says Ken Myer, Active Voice's executive vice president of sales and
marketing. "By independent, we mean that we don't sell telephone systems as our
leading competitors do, instead we focus on creating "best-of-class" messaging
communications solutions for our global customer base. The results of this
report are a powerful validation that we are focusing our efforts in the right
place. Especially when you consider the source -- Dataquest -- who has been a
world leader in IT market analysis for more than 29 years, and is a critical
resource for IT decision-makers."

"When you look at actual numbers of systems shipped, Active Voice made some
significant gains in the last year," says Dataquest/Gartner industry analyst
Megan Marek. "In 1998, Active Voice products accounted for 16.5 percent of all
the voice messaging systems shipped in the United States. In 1999, the company
shipped 28.7 percent of these systems -- that's a 73.9 percent increase from the
year before. According to the data we published in June 2000, Active Voice now
has a 14.4 percent share of the voice messaging market, which makes them number
three in the overall standings."

"Although the Dataquest figures focus on the total number of voice messaging
systems shipped, we expect unified messaging to account for an even larger
portion of revenues going forward," adds Myer. "As a result, unified messaging
is already beginning to account for a larger portion of Active Voice's market
share as well, particularly as IP telephony solutions increase penetration in
the market. With our Unity(TM) family of products, we are perfectly positioned
to provide powerful, flexible communications solutions with software-only
integration capabilities for these exciting new IP technologies. Unity
integrates seamlessly with more than 96 percent of the traditional PBX and new
IP-PBX telephone systems on the market. And since a single Unity can support
both traditional and IP systems at the same time, it is an ideal solution for
businesses converging their voice and data networks. Unity is our fastest
growing product line, in both our reseller and strategic partner channels."
