Psion says Symbian to float
(UPDATE: Updates share price, recasts)

By Richard Meares

LONDON, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Psion, Europe's largest maker of handheld computers, is to float the Symbian consortium it formed to promote the use of its operating system for wireless devices, but not until mid-2001 at the earliest.

The UK company said on Tuesday the flotation, worth up to an estimated five billion pounds ($8 billion), must wait until stock market conditions are right and Symbian products -- from mobile Internet terminals to smartphones -- sell in large volumes.

Chief Executive David Levin told a news conference mass sales were not expected until mid-2001 at the earliest.

He said bankers had not yet been appointed as this would be grossly premature.

Symbian -- whose other shareholders are Ericsson of Sweden , Finland's Nokia , U.S.-based Motorola (NYSE:MOT - news) and Japan's Matsushita -- is not set to break even until 2002 or beyond.

Japan's Sony Corp signed up to Symbian in April as a licensee but not as a shareholder.

The consortium is working on a range of futuristic devices catering for fast Internet using next-generation mobile phone networks which will arrive soon.
