Chinese mobile phones breaking into home market
Aug 8 2000 10:17AM

Homeway
Shanghai's mobile phone market
reported that the market share of
domestic mobile phones has
increased from 1-2% in the past to
10%. The figure is expected to climb
to 15% by the end of the year,
Xinhua News Agency reported.

A recent survey conducted by a
research firm in 30 cities showed that 41% of respondents
were willing to buy domestic mobile phones.

Statistics showed that in the first three months of the year
there were 800,000 mobile phones manufactured by ten
designated Chinese enterprises. All their mobile phones
were almost sold out.

These phones will account for half of the domestic market
share in the next three to five years, said President of the
Eastern Communications Co. Ltd Shi Jixing in a recent
interview with Xinhua. (photo: Motorola GC87, manufactured

Insiders predict that the number of Chinese mobile phone
users will increase by 28 million this year, 10 million more
than last year. Five million of them will buy domestic mobile
phones.
