If there is something to criticize in QCOM's marketing, I would first point the finger at their inability to effectively squash the recent FUD in the press.

To be honest, I'm not sure how much you can ask of them here. They first put out a press release explicitly stating how they'll get paid for all CDMA variants of 3G, and then they put out a second press release that not only shed light on their W-CDMA ASIC development plans, but also listed the large number of companies that have signed W-CDMA licensing agreements with them.

I don't think the blame lies on Qualcomm here, but upon the sad fact that when the media feels like kicking a dog that's down (which is all they ever really kick, save for the occasional sanctimonious, Alan Abelson-type "we're in a bubble" rant), they don't let up, regardless of the picture that reality paints. As with so many other things related to Qualcomm, this is all very similar to what Rambus once dealt with.
