Should/Can AMD buy the S3 graphics chipset business?
From the Register, apparently VIA's attempt to buy S3's chipset business for $377M has been blocked by the Taiwanese government. Apparently the purchase price is 3X larger than VIA's paid in capital.

Now, VIA has all kinds of plans nearing completion to use the Savage4 chipset (and newer versions?) in both Intel and AMD chipsets. Seems to me, that if AMD swooped down on S3 and picked up this business as a "white knight," AMD would obtain 1)tremendous leverage with VIA, and 2)could also license the graphics core to ALi and SiS, further increasing competition in the chipset industry and 3)could obtain valuable technology for set top boxes, X-Box alternatives, etc.
