You can see in the table on page 6 that Hitachi pays no royalties on their MMC or their CF cards.

Wily, I read the white paper and I don't see any discussions of royalties at all. I wouldn't assume they don't pay royalties. (see below)

Possibly they are cross-licensed with Sandisk somehow.

I did a search on the SNDK website for Hitachi and came up with the following:

SANDISK ANNOUNCES RECORD REVENUE AND EARNINGS

...Revenues from licenses and royalties in the current quarter increased by $2.5 million, to $5.9 million, attributable to recent cross-license agreements entered into by SanDisk with Hitachi,...

Clearly, Hitachi is paying them royalties.
